London Innovation Event Challenges Upcoming Entrepreneurs

  • Synaptive proud to support the Proteus Competition

On March 2, 2017, Synaptive Medical attended and was the lead sponsor at the Proteus Innovation Competition’s Live Pitching Finale in London, Ontario. This four-month competition took three innovative technologies developed in London and challenged entrepreneurs-in-training to create a business plan to commercialize those future products. The technologies included a cloud-based data collection app, a hand-held breast scanner and mirror boxes for lower-extremity therapy. Over 100 individuals, 75 percent of whom were students, formed teams and submitted entries.

The Proteus Innovation Competition is one way Synaptive supports research and development in London. During the opening ceremonies, Wes Hodges, co-founder and director of Informatics and External Collaborations said, “Synaptive’s existing research and development partnerships with the Robarts Research Institute at Western University, CSTAR at London Health Science Centre and the Ontario Centres of Excellence make supporting the Proteus competition a natural fit. We’re committed to working with London’s innovation ecosystem to develop advanced capabilities in robotics, medical software and surgical imaging.”

Wes Hodges, Director, Informatics and External Collaboration, speaks with Kate Young, Member of Parliament for London West, about Synaptive’s partnerships in London.

The competition included three stages: abstract creation, business plan development and a live pitch. Once participants formed teams and selected a technology, they created an abstract outlining their commercial product and target market.

Of the 39 abstracts that were submitted, 25 teams moved on to the next round, where they participated in workshops on business plan development. During the Live Pitching Finale, the six remaining teams pitched their commercialization plan in front of an audience and panel of expert judges.

The winning teams in each category received $7,500 each to license their corresponding technologies and launch their go-to-market strategies. They include:

    • Cloud-Based Data Collection App: Team Apex (Andrew Kope, Alexander Moszczynski and Patrick McCunnn)
    • Hand-held Breast-Scanner Technology: e-Palp (Tomi Nano, Justin Michael, Maya Kumar and Terenz Escartin)
    • Mirror Box for Lower-Extremity Therapy: The Medical Innovation Fellows ( Esther Lau, Dr. Solmaz Karamdoust and Dr. Ashley Hannon)
