Neurosurgery training kit that simulates living brain recognized in Health category

Toronto, Canada (SEPTEMBER 11, 2017) — Synaptive Medical Inc.’s brain simulator training kit, which simulates the features of a living brain to allow users to practice procedures such as stitching a blood vessel, has received an honorable mention in the health category of Fast Company’s 2017 Innovation by Design Awards.

“Newly qualified neurosurgeons lack repeatable realistic training materials for cerebrovascular surgery,” says Cameron Piron, president and co-founder of Synaptive Medical. “Instead, they rely on animal models and cadaver tissue that restrict immersion, clinical workflows and variety of tissue pathology, among other issues. We designed a simulation platform to address these limitations and make it possible to conduct more realistic exercises that come closer to simulating actual surgical conditions.”

The Anastomosis Kit, part of Synaptive’s BrightMatter™ Simulate training suite, attempts to solve the problems presented by existing simulation materials with a life-like training tool that allows users to practice surgery as they would in the operating room. The system recreates the cortical surface of the human brain and simulates blood vessels to realistically respond to manipulation by surgical instruments.

Synaptive Medical’s Anastomosis Kit, part of the company’s Simulate training suite, simulates the features of a living human brain to allow users to practice surgery as they would in the operating room. The innovation received an honorable mention in Fast Company’s 2017 Innovation by Design awards in the health category.

Users can simulate the workflow of a variety of case types and the training models are made with benign, biodegradable polymeric materials, allowing surgeons, residents and other hospital staff to practice anywhere without the limited availability of hospital and university training facilities.
